KELLY M. WHALING, M.A.

Doctoral Candidate

I hope this website gives you insight into my clinical work, research, and teaching.

My area of specialization in both research and practice is in working with youth who have experienced trauma, and exhibit suicidal ideation and attempt, particularly if those youth are involved in the juvenile justice system or are at-risk of becoming involved.

My clinical work is conducted within an interpersonal framework, with an emphasis on attachment, neurobiology, and the resilience of individuals and communities. Like my clinical work, my research and teaching emphasizes the strength of individuals and communities, and values the transformative power of relationships.

“Finding words where words were absent before and, as a result, being able to share your deepest pain and deepest feelings with another human being. This is one of the most profound experiences we can have, and such resonance, in which hitherto unspoken words can be discovered, uttered, and received, is fundamental to healing the isolation of trauma—especially if other people in our lives have ignored or silenced us. Communicating fully is the opposite of being traumatized.”
